2017 Legacy Family

Max ’60 and Carol Baumann ‘60 Kiep

The Kiep family has had a major impact on Badin High School thanks to the family tree of graduates from our predecessor schools.

Max Hemann Kiep was a 1960 graduate of Hamilton Catholic, following in the footsteps of his father, Ted, and their brothers, who went to Hamilton Catholic as well after the family arrived in Hamilton from Germany in 1891.

Carol Baumann Kiep was a 1960 graduate of Hamilton Catholic’s sister school, Notre Dame High, and married Max in 1964. They are the proud parents of five Badin graduates – Ted ’86, Tim ’88, Terry ’89, Tracy ’91 and Tony ’95. They have 10 grandchildren as well.

Indeed, the Kiep family has another crucial direct connection to the Badin legacy: Max’s grandmother, Katherine, and her family, the Wagners, operated a meat market in Hamilton’s Second Ward whose barn and slaughterhouse were located on New London Road. In the early 1960s, it was this land that was sold to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for the future Stephen T. Badin High School.

Max Kiep worked in the Butler County Clerk of Courts office from 1960-66 for his uncle, Joe Kiep ‘26. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966-1970, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. In 1970, Max began a 32-year career with General Motors, culminating with a district manager position for 16 years before his retirement in 2002. His outstanding sales record with the company earned him recognition as a member of the elite General Motors Parts Master Guild Sales Group.

Carol Kiep was employed by the Hamilton City Schools for more than 25 years and in 2013 she was Hamilton High’s nominee for the Educator of the Year through the Hamilton Community Foundation. For the past four years she has worked for the Great Miami YMCA at the Hamilton Central Y. One of her fondest memories from Notre Dame High was being able to raise the flag every day during her senior year.

For Max and Carol Kiep, faith, family and education are all intertwined. Memories of St. Veronica’s, St. Joseph’s and St. Ann’s endure. As a father and a mother, they believe in the importance of Catholic education and the sacrifices and struggles to provide for a Catholic education at Hamilton Catholic, Notre Dame and Badin High School. The legacy of the Catholic faith, service and the importance of quality Catholic education have been passed down for more than 125 years of the Kiep family in Hamilton, and they are grateful for all of the blessings they have received.
